E. Dale Abel, chair and DEO of the Department of Internal Medicine in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, will deliver the University of Iowa’s 35th annual Presidential Lecture on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018.

“U.S. News & World Report” has ranked University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in six specialties in the 2017–18 Best Children’s Hospitals list: No. 20 in neonatology, No. 21 in nephrology, No. 34 in cancer, No. 36 in urology, No. 45 in pulmonology, and No. 48 in cardiology/heart surgery.

University of Iowa researchers have identified a brain region involved in cocaine addiction. The findings could lead to targeted drugs or improved behavioral treatments for substance addiction, including opioid dependency.

Doug True, the University of Iowa’s former senior vice president for finance and operations and treasurer, will serve as the interim associate vice president and chief financial officer for University of Iowa Health Care, effective June 30, 2017, when current CFO Ken Fisher will retire.

For the third year in a row, “Forbes Magazine” has included University of Iowa Health Care in its annual listing of the nation’s top employers. In the 2017 “Forbes” rankings of “America’s Best Employers,” UI Health Care was named the No. 5 employer in the health care industry and No. 14 overall.

Mgbechi Erondu received a Master of Fine Arts from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 2016 and will graduate this month from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She hopes to use both fields—fiction writing and medicine—to remind the world of how much people matter to one another.

The University of Iowa will award honorary degrees to personal computer pioneer Ted Waitt and corporate health and wellness innovator Martín-José Sepúlveda during spring 2017 commencement exercises May 12 and 13.

About 4,800 UI students will receive their degrees at spring 2017 commencement ceremonies, which begin May 11 with the College of Pharmacy and end on May 26 with the College of Dentistry.
