Outdoor garden, memorial area will be created near UI Main Library

The University of Iowa is paying homage to Armed Services veterans by creating an outdoor garden and memorial area near the Main Library in Gibson Square.

The Gibson Square Veterans Tribute is supported by Facilities Management and made possible through collaboration with the campus community and representatives of the Armed Services. The tribute includes special garden landscaping, seating, memorial plaques to each of the Armed Services Branches, and a flagpole supporting the American flag.

Dan Heater, director of Building & Landscape Services and U.S. Navy veteran, says, “The Gibson Square Veterans Tribute is intended to provide the campus and community with a contemplative space dedicated to remembering and honoring those who served our country.”

Site preparation and landscaping are finished, and final completion is expected in spring 2016.

The project is supported, in part, by the UI Faculty Staff Giving Program and donations to the Campus Beautification Fund for Gibson Square Veterans Tribute. Anyone interested in an opportunity to see the tangible outcome of their generosity is encouraged to contribute.
