UI Physics and Astronomy Professor Don Gurnett has made a tremendous impact on the field of space instrumentation. The probes he helped design for Voyager 1 signaled that the spacecraft had breached our solar system's heliosphere and become the first man-made object in interstellar space.

"Don's career is really the career of our effort in space," says Jim Green, director of NASA's Planetary Science Division.

Margaret Kivelson, UCLA professor emerita in space physics, says, "He has had a remarkable group of students who have worked with him and have gone on to become leaders in their own right. Don's influence on the field of space physics is really outstanding."
