Event marks transition to clinical experience for new second-year students

WHAT: University of Iowa College of Dentistry White Coat Ceremony

WHEN: Friday, May 8, 6 p.m.

WHERE: Room C20 Pomerantz Center, UI campus in Iowa City

WHO: UI College of Dentistry students and families, faculty, and alumni

WHY: The annual White Coat Ceremony closes the first year of dental school for students at the UI College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, and marks their transition to additional patient care responsibilities during year two. Students will be ceremonially cloaked with their first white laboratory coats and will recite the Oath of a Dentist. It's a milestone for every dental student.

Media are welcome to cover the event. Participating UI faculty and alumni (graduation years and degrees in parentheses) include:

  • David Johnsen ('73 M.S.), dean of the college, will offer remarks.
  • Larry Squire (’76 D.D.S.), associate professor of family dentistry and member of the Iowa Section of the International College of Dentists; Kathy Kell ('79 D.D.S.), treasurer and executive committee member at FDI World Dental Federation and president of the Iowa Section of the American College of Dentists; Fred Burnham, Iowa Section chair of the Pierre Fauchard Academy; and Penni Ryan, past president of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society, will also welcome the students.
  • Michael Kanellis ('79 D.D.S.), assistant dean for patient care and professor of pediatric dentistry, will give the keynote address.
