The University of Iowa Police Department has filed charges related to a summer 2014 incident in which a video recording device was found in a restroom on the University of Iowa campus.

Nicodemus Hendrik, 46, was arrested on April 30th and charged with 13 counts of invasion of privacy, a serious misdemeanor. Hendrik is a former employee of Information Technology Services, the department in which the device was found.

Following the incident, ITS invited UI police to conduct a safety assessment and elicited suggestions from staff about improving workplace safety.

Based on feedback from staff and police, the department has already made several changes to enhance security. The department will also continue to complete background checks for all new hires.

“It goes without saying that this was a very unfortunate incident. It is difficult for our staff, especially the individuals who have been directly affected. I regret that anyone had to experience this violation of privacy and safety,” says Steve Fleagle, associate vice president and chief information officer. “We are committed to doing everything we can to provide a safe and secure work environment.”

ITS staff has been notified of this important development, and counseling services are available.
