Arrest is tied to crime alert issued on Sunday, Feb. 1

Updated: University of Iowa Police have arrested one person in connection with multiple burglary reports in the Quadrangle Residence Hall earlier this year.

Initial reports to police on Feb. 1 indicated the suspect and two others entered 12 unlocked dorm rooms and stole property while the rooms were unoccupied or the residents were sleeping. UI police interrupted the crime in-progress and recovered much of the property.

Police arrested Jacob Odean, 19, of Davenport on Saturday, April 18. Odean, who is not a UI student, was charged with 12 counts of second-degree burglary and one count of first-degree theft in connection with the reports. Police arrested a second suspect, Alec Leibold, 19, of Davenport on Monday, April 20. Leibold, who is not a UI student, was charged with 12 counts of second-degree burglary and one count of first-degree theft. Police arrested a third suspect, James Hua, on Monday, April 27. Hua, who is not a UI student, was charged with 12 counts of second-degree burglary and one count of first-degree theft. 

The arrest is linked to a crime alert issued on Sunday, Feb. 1 and the case remains under investigation.

UI Police strongly encourage all residence hall occupants to secure their doors at all times, even when they are leaving for short periods of time or are sleeping inside the rooms.
