WHAT: The annual "Cancer in Iowa" report issued by the State Health Registry of Iowa, based in the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

WHO: Mary Charlton, assistant professor of epidemiology at the UI College of Public Health, will present the report findings and discuss the report's focus on melanoma.

George Weiner, director of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI, president of the board of directors for the Iowa Cancer Consortium, and president of the Association of American Cancer Institutes, will discuss recent advances in melanoma research and how they are helping patients.

Brian Swick, clinical associate professor of dermatology and pathology at the UI Carver College of Medicine, will discuss melanoma risk factors as well as the emphasis on early detection and diagnosis.

In addition to the physicians, a patient affected by melanoma will also be available to offer a personal perspective.

Following the formal remarks and the Q&A session, the presenters will be available for one-on-one interviews.

WHERE: Ellig Classroom, N120, located in the College of Public Health Building (CPHB). Metered parking is available in front of building or below in Lot 42. Additional parking available in Newton Road Ramp located on Newton Road.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Copies of "Cancer in Iowa: 2015" will be available at the conference. CD-ROMs of maps/figures from the report will also be available for reporters only. The report includes estimates of cancer diagnoses and deaths in Iowa for 2015 and a special section on melanoma and related cancers.

ARCHIVE: This news conference will be taped and made available by early afternoon for remote news media and other interested parties. The archive will be available on the UI College of Public Health’s website.
