Scholarship providing degree opportunity for first-generation students

Seven students from Storm Lake High School in northwest Iowa are the first recipients of a new scholarship at the University of Iowa.

The Storm Lake Scholars scholarship is part of a student’s financial aid package and covers the unmet need of their total cost of attending the UI. Funding is provided by the UI Office of Student Financial Aid and monitored by the Center for Diversity and Enrichment in the UI Chief Diversity Office.

The Storm Lake Scholars Program offers resources and support to help students make a successful social and academic transition to college. Upon arriving on campus, scholars are required to participate in The Iowa Edge program. Other requirements include:

  • Maintaining a 2.5 cumulative grade point average or higher.
  • Maintaining continuous full-time enrollment (12 semester hours per semester).
  • Filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year and continuing to demonstrate financial need. The grant may be received for no more than four consecutive years of undergraduate study. The amount of the award may vary depending on financial need.
  • Attending a monthly meeting with the Storm Lake Scholars Program director and a UI faculty member.
  • Enrolling in the Storm Lake Scholars first-year seminar.
