The University of Iowa will begin work on an 18-month project to replace the aging and deteriorating steam distribution system beneath Riverside Drive and Grand Avenue, between the Iowa River and Byington Road. This primary section of the steam distribution system serves the university’s west campus, including University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Crews will begin work this weekend, Jan. 30-Feb. 1, with pavement modifications near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Riverside Drive. Southbound traffic on Riverside Drive will be reduced to one lane for approximately 400 feet just north of Grand Avenue. Eastbound traffic on Grand Avenue will be reduced to one lane from Byington Road to Riverside Drive. Both eastbound lanes of Grand Avenue will reopen 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, for basketball traffic.

The project has been designed in multiple phases to minimize traffic impact, but will at times require lane reductions on Grand Avenue between Byington Road and Riverside Drive.
