The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) has selected 15 of the most significant randomized controlled trials that influence the practice of physical therapy to ever be published.

One of the trials was conducted by Gregory Schmidt, MD, professor of internal medicine, and Rhonda Barr, DPT, CCS, clinical specialist in the Department of Rehabilitation Therapies.

Schmidt and Barr were co-authors of “Early physical and occupational therapy in mechanically ventilated, critically ill patients: a randomized control trial” published in The Lancet in 2009. This trial has been a major contributor to a paradigm shift in beginning early mobilization and rehabilitation in the critical care setting.
