Chuck Green, who has served as the director of public safety at the University of Iowa for 20 years, has announced his retirement.

Green's retirement is effective January 9th of 2015.

"It has been my distinct honor and privilege to serve the University of Iowa community and work with so many dedicated and honorable people," Green says. "January 9th will mark my 20th year as director of public safety and, over the last two decades, the men and women of this department have built a program that we can all be extremely proud of."

Green has worked at the UI for a total of 29 years, which includes nine years as a manager of security and fire safety with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and 20 years as the director of Public Safety.

His retirement in January will also mark a total of 39 years of public service, which includes 10 years with the state Department of Public Safety as an Iowa State Trooper, and later with the State Fire Marshal's office.

During his career at the UI, Green made strides in safety planning and disaster training that have become an instrumental fixture on campus.

"Chuck Green has been the consummate professional in the University of Iowa police force," says Doug True, the UI's senior vice president and treasurer. "The university community has benefited for 20 years from Chuck's leadership, fairness, and calm under pressure, no matter the situation. We wish Chuck all the best in his retirement. He leaves the Department of Public Safety better able to protect the campus and resolute in its commitment to transparency and accountability."

Dave Visin, who has served as the UI public safety department's associate director since 2006, will fill Green's position on an interim basis until a search is conducted to fill it permanently.
