Worth Fighting For

Worth Fighting For is a campus-wide exploration of war, healing, and the broad impact of conflicts both current and historical.

The project is inspired by Healing Wars, a groundbreaking new work by Liz Lerman, which the University of Iowa’s Hancher will present Nov. 13-15 in Space Place Theatre on the UI campus.

As artists in residence this semester, Lerman and members of her company have engaged UI students and faculty in a variety of areas to explore interdisciplinary research, the themes of the project, and methods to create art. A series of public talks and workshops have taken place throughout the fall. The project culminates in November with a pop up museum featuring student work and Hancher’s presentation of Healing Wars.

In Healing Wars, Lerman creates “exhibits” that introduce characters from the show in short interdisciplinary forms that focus on a specific person, moment, or action. Inspired by Lerman’s methods and by the subject matter of Healing Wars, students are making interdisciplinary work in a variety of forms including objects to exhibit, short performances, and multimedia creations.

The Pop Up Museum, which will be on display in the Library Learning Commons, will showcase student work from a number of departments on campus including art education, arts management, dance, history, the International Writing Program, music, nursing, the Public Policy Center, religious studies, rhetoric, theater, studio art, and veterans affairs. The museum will be open Nov. 7-11.

On Friday, Nov. 7, the Pop Up Museum will open to the public at 5 p.m. There will be a reception, interactive activities, performances, and exhibits during the opening day. Performances will also take place on Sunday, Nov. 9, from 2-5 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 11 is the culminating day of activities at the museum to coincide with Veterans Day. From 3 to 4:45 p.m. the Forkenbrock Series on Public Policy will present a panel discussion titled The Future of Health Care for Veterans in Shambaugh Auditorium. Performances and other events will take place throughout the day. For more information and updates visit this Hancher webpage.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, contact the Hancher Box Office in advance at 319-335-1158.
