Monday, October 13, 2014

A new series of free Lifelong Learning events organized by the University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA) kicks off on Oct. 22 with a session on small fish that offer big clues to human diseases.

In “Development and Disease: Fishing for Answers,” UI biology professor Diane Slusarski explains how scientists use the tiny zebra fish to model and understand the underlying mechanisms of human diseases. The event takes place at Melrose Meadows, 350 Dublin Drive, Iowa City, with a reception at 6 p.m. and a discussion at 6:30 p.m. The program is sponsored by Melrose Meadows.

The UIAA’s popular Lifelong Learning events provide enriching educational opportunities on topics that range from health issues and current events to career development. The alumni association works with UI partners and external sponsors to bring the expertise of university faculty and staff to communities across Iowa.

Other upcoming Lifelong Learning events include:

  • Nov. 13, in Urbandale: “The First Stars,” with UI Physics and Astronomy Professor Philip E. Kaaret.
  • Dec. 7, in Des Moines: “Telemedicine in Iowa: Improving Health Care Delivery,” with Patrick D. Brophy, UI director of pediatric nephrology, dialysis, and transplantation, as well as the assistant vice president for the university's eHealth & Innovation Center.
