The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Riverside Recital Hall in Iowa City (405 North Riverside Drive). Six musicians, including clarinetist David Shifrin, will perform a program entitled Autumnal Brahms.

Late in life—after flirting with retirement—Johannes Brahms composed two works for virtuoso clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. Shifrin will perform Trio for clarinet, cello, and piano in A Minor, Op. 11 and Quintet for clarinet, two violins, viola, and cello in B Minor, Op. 115. The program also includes Sonata for violin and piano in D Minor, Op. 108; Intermezzo for piano in E-flat Major, Op. 117, No. 1; and Rhapsody for piano in E-flat Major, Op. 119, No. 4.

A Yale University faculty member since 1987, Shifrinis artistic director of Yale's Chamber Music Society series and Yale in New York, a concert series at Carnegie Hall. He has been an Artist of the Chamber Music Society for 23 years and served as its artistic director from 1992 to 2004, inaugurating the CMS Two program and the annual Brandenburg Concerto concerts. Currently in his 32nd season as artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, he has collaborated with the Guarneri, Tokyo, and Emerson string quartets and is a member of the Kavafian-Schub-Shifrin Trio. Winner of the Avery Fisher Prize, he is also the recipient of a Solo Recitalist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Shifrin will be joined by Shai Wosner (piano), Erin Keefe (violin), Alexander Sitkovetsky (violin), Mark Holloway (viola), and Timothy Eddy (cello).

Autumnal Brahms is supported by the Hancher Partners and gifts to the Hancher Circle through the UI Foundation.
