Portrait of Al Jarreau
Al Jarreau, celebrated jazz vocalist and UI College of Education graduate returns to campus Sept. 18 as part of the college's Distinguished Speaker Series.

(Editor's note: Due to the potential for an overflow crowd attending this event, a video of Al Jarreau's discussion will be made available after the presentation on the Iowa Now and College of Education websites. You can also watch the discussion via live stream here. )

Six-time Grammy-winning jazz vocalist and University of Iowa graduate Al Jarreau will return to his alma mater for a public discussion Thursday, Sept. 18, in advance of his Sept. 19 performance at the Iowa Soul Festival.

Jarreau will participate in a one-hour discussion moderated by Iowa Public Radio's Ben Kieffer Thursday, Sept. 18, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the College of Education's Jones Commons, 301 Lindquist Center North on the UI campus.

Jarreau's talk, which is part of the college's Distinguished Lecture Series, is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Prior to the public event, Jarreau will meet with a small group of University of Iowa students interested in music for an intimate discussion.

Jarreau, a 1964 graduate of the UI College of Education’s Rehabilitation Counseling master’s program, worked as a counselor in San Francisco before pursuing music full time. His musical career has earned him accolades from around the world and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is one of only a few vocalists in history to win Grammy awards in three different categories—jazz, pop, and R&B.

“We follow Mr. Jarreau’s career closely and with great pride at the College of Education,” says College of Education Dean Nicholas Colangelo. “Our alumni span the globe and the professional gamut, but few are more recognizable than Mr. Jarreau. We are thrilled that he is coming back to Iowa City and sharing his time with us.”
