In preparation for the return of students and residence hall move-in, the UI is preparing to reopen some major pedestrian pathways across the Iowa River.

The Hancher Footbridge is scheduled to reopen late afternoon on Wednesday, Aug. 13, and the Iowa Memorial Union Footbridge, alternately known as the Fine Arts Bridge, is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Friday, Aug. 15. The footbridges were closed in early July due to flood risks along the Iowa River.

Sidewalks along the east and west sides of the Iowa River, from Iowa Avenue to Park Road, will remain closed for a month or so longer to accommodate flood repair work in the area. Pedestrians should use North Riverside Drive to travel north and south.

The reopening of the footbridges will follow a full safety review and assessment. The UI’s commitment to the safety and accessibility of the campus for students, faculty, staff, and visitors is of the highest priority.
