Nelson, who retires July 3, was first hired by the UI Alumni Association in 1988 and has served as its president and CEO since 1997. Following a two-year stint as associate director of alumni and admissions at Drake University, his alma mater, he served from 1979 to 1987 as director of alumni and parent programs at Drake.

At the UI, he oversees an annual budget of $3.5 million and the many communications, programs, and services that the UIAA offers its 45,000 members. Under his leadership, the organization, which also extends its services to some 257,000 living UI alumni, has received regional and national recognition.

On June 6, UI officials named Jeffrey D. Kueter to succeed Nelson.
