Does the start of summer make you long for two weeks of Ferris wheels, funnel cakes, and prize pigs? Although the state fair doesn’t happen until August, you can experience the delight through “The Iowa State Fair: A Photo Exhibit by Kurt Ullrich,” opening Thursday, June 12, at the University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum.

The museum will host an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening, and photographer Kurt Ullrich will speak at 6 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display in the Hanson Humanities Gallery until August 10.

Ullrich's essays have appeared in theChicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Houston Chronicle, Des Moines Register, Cedar Rapids Gazette, Quad-City Times, Dubuque Telegraph Herald, and many others. His photographs have appeared in theBoston Globe, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Des Moines Register,and many other newspapers. He lives in rural Jackson County, Iowa, with his wife, Bobbi Alpers. His photos can also be seen in The Iowa State Fair, printed by University of Iowa Press.

The Old Capitol Museum will also screen two classic films in conjunction with the exhibit: State Fair (1945) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, and Charlotte’s Web (1973) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 25.
