The University of Iowa Mobile Museum will bring history, archaeology, and paleontology to Council Bluffs with a stop at the Western Historic Trails Center.

The museum, a collaboration between the Office of the State Archaeologist, the Old Capitol Museum, and the UI Museum of Natural History, will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Western Historic Trails Center, 3434 Richard Downing Ave.

The 38-foot custom-built RV features exhibits on Iowa history, archaeology, and paleontology, as well as an interactive digital wall that invites visitors to explore UI research and creativity. Iowa’s Ancient Agriculturalists, an exhibit curated by the Office of the State Archaeologist, tells the story of the Glenwood Culture, who lived in the Loess Hills of Western Iowa over seven centuries ago.

The Western Historic Trails Center provides information, programming, and exhibits on the routes that pioneers took from Iowa, including Lewis and Clark’s journey to the Pacific Northwest, and the routes of the Oregon, California, and Mormon trails. The State Historical Society of Iowa owns and operates the center, which was designed and built by the National Park Service and local partners.
