Health care quality expert Dr. Christine Cassel will deliver the 2014 Joseph L. Parkin Memorial Lecture on Aging from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, June 9, in the Prem Sahai Auditorium of the Medical and Education Research Facility (MERF) on the University of Iowa health sciences campus.

Her lecture titled, "Building a Bridge Across the Quality Chasm: Connecting Evidence-based Geriatric Care With Quality Indicators and Payment" is free and open to the public and will be preceded by a reception in the MERF atrium, including light snacks and beverages.

Cassel is CEO and president of National Quality Forum, a not-for-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., that aims to improve the quality of American health care. A leading expert on geriatric medicine, medical ethics, and quality of care issues, Cassel is a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and previously served as president and CEO of the American Board of Internal Medicine. She has co-authored several influential national reports on hospital safety and quality, as well as numerous books and scholarly articles on geriatric medicine, aging, bioethics, and health policy.

Cassel will discuss how the efforts at the National Quality Forum can support healthy and independent aging. The lecture will last approximately 50 minutes with time for discussion afterwards.

The Parkin Lecture is made possible by a gift to the UI Foundation from the Retirement Research Foundation in memory of Joe L. Parkin, and is hosted by the University of Iowa Center on Aging and the UI Carver College of Medicine.
