University of Iowa students—and anyone interested in keeping tabs on what’s going on about campus—have a new set of tools at hand.

The student-oriented HawkTools mobile app has added new options for viewing, sharing, and adding events to calendars. The enhanced event promotion and management functions are available in the latest version of the iOS and Android apps that hit stores this week.

The upgrade pulls event from the popular After Class website and stems from collaboration between Information Technology Services, Student Life Marketing + Design, and UI Student Government.

“This is a great way to promote exciting events that student organizations put together for the campus,” says Katherine Valde, UISG president. “It’s a simple way to figure out what is happening each day and learn about a concert, lecture, or film screening that may not have been on your radar before.”

Students say info about events is one of the most important things they look for in campus communications.

“This calendar includes everything from cultural to late-night events and even allows students to share events with friends on their mobile calendars,” says Jack Cumming, UISG vice president. “I hope that when students start using the app, it will catch on and be used by people across campus.”

To date, more than 3,100 users have installed the iOs version of the app, and about 900 have installed its Android counterpart. On top of events, the app offers in-your-pocket access to frequently used resources including:

  • Burge and Hillcrest Market Place menus
  • ICON course tools
  • Student records on ISIS
  • Listings of student organizations
  • A guide to safety and support resources

The free download is available from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
