University of Iowa education professor Deborah Linebarger will discuss the impact of media on children’s learning and behavior at an upcoming UI Alumni Association (UIAA) event in Des Moines.

The event takes place on Tuesday, April 22, at 6:45 p.m. at the John and Mary Pappajohn Education Center, 1200 Grand Avenue, Des Moines as part of the UIAA’s ongoing Lifelong Learning series.

Before the discussion, a welcome reception will be held at 5:45 p.m. for Christopher Morphew, new executive associate dean for research and innovation at the UI College of Education. Linebarger is also director of the Iowa Children's Media Lab and a consultant to Congress, media producers, and early childhood nonprofits such as LeapFrog, Disney, Nickelodeon, and Sesame Workshop. In this event, she will also share details of a new Sesame Street project that uses Cookie Monster to help preschoolers learn self-control skills.

Cookie Monster spoofs Icona Pop's hit song "I Love It" in this video demonstrating the need to master self-regulation skills by using different strategies on waiting to eat a cookie. Video used with the permission of Sesame Street.

The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Those who wish to attend must register on the UI Alumni Association website by noon on Wednesday, April 16.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI-sponsored events. If you need a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, contact Whit France-Kelly in advance at 319-335-2311.
