Faculty—

Meenakshi Gigi Durham, professor of journalism and mass communication in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), will be awarded the 2014 Teresa Award for the Advancement of Feminist Scholarship. The award will be presented at a ceremony on May 23 in Seattle, Wash.

Randall McEntaffer, assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in CLAS, was one of 102 scientists and engineers honored at The White House by President Barack Obama April 14 as recipients of Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).

The PECASE Award is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on scientists and engineers in the early stages of their independent research careers.

McEntaffer's work involves NASA's space-based X-ray astronomy observations.The goal is to improve X-ray astronomy research instruments to be carried aboard future space telescopes.

PECASE awards, established by President Clinton in 1996, recognize innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology and commitment to community service as demonstrated through scientific leadership, public education, or community outreach.

McEntaffer, a Sioux City, Iowa, native who earned bachelor's degrees in physics and astronomy from the UI, joined the UI faculty in 2008.

Sheldon Kurtz, formerly the Percy Bordwell Professor of Law in the College of Law, was named the David H. Vernon Professor of Law. He succeeds the late Randall P. Bezanson as the second holder of the David H. Vernon professorship.

The UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) has named two faculty members as Collegiate Fellows, the college’s highest faculty honor, in recognition of their distinguished teaching, research, and service.

Colin Gordon, professor in the Department of History, and Kevin Kregel, professor and chair of the Department of Health and Human Physiology, will serve renewable five-year appointments as CLAS Collegiate Fellows.

The 2014-2016 Collegiate Scholars are Claire Fox, associate professor in the Departments of English and Spanish and Portuguese, and Susan Chrysler White, associate professor in the School of Art and Art History. Collegiate Scholar awards honor tenured faculty preparing for promotion to professor who demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarly or creative work.

The 2014-2016 Dean’s Scholars are Sarah Kanouse, assistant professor in the School of Art and Art History; and Randall McEntaffer, assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Dean’s Scholar awards honor assistant professors preparing for tenure review who demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarly or creative work.

Students—

Aaron Scherer, a graduate student in Social Psychology, has been awarded the 2014 Spence Award. His dissertation research is concerned with the impact of people’s political views on how they seek information in the news.He is an author on eight peer-reviewed journal articles and plans to graduate this spring and begin a postdoctoral position at the University of Michigan.

Adam Steinmetz, a graduate student in Behavioral Cognitive Neuroscience, has been awarded the 2014 Lewis Award. His dissertation research is concerned with the role of cannabinoid receptors in cerebellar learning. He is an author on 14 peer-reviewed journal articles and plans to graduate this spring and begin a postdoctoral position at New York University.

The UI College of Engineering has announced that the student business plan for a company named "Real Property Intelligence" is the winner of its 2013-14 Hubert E. Storer Engineering Student Entrepreneurial Start-up Award.

Real Property Intelligence's flagship product is RP3, or Real Property Probability Prediction. RP3 wraps BIG data, artificial intelligence, and risk analysis into a powerful web interface to revolutionize the multi-billion dollar Automated Valuation Model (AVM) industry. AVM is a mathematical tool that can provide real estate valuations. Lending institutions, investment groups, and other real estate professionals run over one billion AVM's per month worldwide at a rate of $10-25 per AVM run.

The Real Property Intelligence management team includes Lee Nicholson, CEO; John Nicholson, COO and CTO; and Bailey Smith, CFO. John Nicholson is a graduate student in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The annual award, established in 2002 and funded by an endowed gift from the late College of Engineering alumnus Hubert E. Storer (Bachelor of Science 1959 industrial engineering), currently provides $7,500 of initial financial support for a College of Engineering student technological business plan.

Alumna—

Tami Plein, (Master of Science, 2001) has been awarded the Excellence in Science Teaching award from the Iowa Academy of Science. The award was presented at the Iowa Academy of Science annual meeting on April 12 in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Three UI undergraduates presented work at the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society national convention in Savannah, Ga., Feb. 26-March 1. Alexander Grapp, a senior from Johnston, Iowa, presented a paper called "Finished Faces: Death as Conclusion" on Dickinson and Whitman. Paul Hossenlopp, a junior from Broken Bow, Okla., presented a creative nonfiction piece called “Conner and Aaron." Jamie Simpher, a senior from St. Louis, Mo., presented a paper titled "Carrying the Fire: Facing the Absurd in Cormac McCarthy's The Road."
