The University of Iowa School of Music will present “Hearing, Voice, Singing, and Self-Regulation: Polyvagal Theory and the Power of Music,” a presentation by physical therapist Matt Erb at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, in Room 150 of Clinton Street Music 6 in downtown Iowa City.

The presentation will touch on the evolutionary biology of the vagal nerve as it relates to hearing, human voice, and music in social engagement (including singing with others) and self-regulation of the nervous system. The theory addresses the neuroscience of music, voice, and hearing.

Erb is a faculty member with the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C. He specializes in working with headache, migraine, dizziness, and chronic pain conditions. He practices holistic physiotherapy in the Minneapolis area and has special interest in polyvagal theory.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
