Monday, February 10, 2014

Editor's Note: Because of inclement weather, the Empty Bowl Sale originally scheduled for Monday, Feb. 17, has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, in the Old Capitol Town Center. Times and dates have been updated in the story below.

Interested in doing some good in the community? Lending a helping hand could be as easy as eating a cookie. The University of Iowa Ceramics Society and Historic Foodies will host an Empty Bowl Sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, in the Old Capitol Town Center.

The sale, benefiting the Iowa City Shelter House, will feature ceramic bowls crafted by UI Studio Arts students and filled with cookies prepared by the Historic Foodies.

Information about the vast Szathmary Culinary Archives, housed by the UI Special Collections and University Archives, will be available along with recipe cards and historic cookie recipes from the collection. Participants who bring an item needed by the shelter will receive a discount off the bowl and the cookies. To view a list of items currently needed, visit the Shelter House of Iowa City website.

The Old Capitol Museum, UI Libraries and Special Collections, and New Pioneer Co-op are sponsoring the sale.

The Historic Foodies group, a partnership between UI Special Collections and the Old Capitol Museum, meets at Public Space Z, 120 N. Dubuque St., on the last Tuesday of each month to explore recipes and cooking methods from the past. Learn more by visiting the Old Capitol Museum website.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in these programs, contact Old Capitol Museum in advance at 319-335-0546.
