What do video games have to do with faith?

University of Iowa alumnus Kevin Schut, an avid gamer and committed Christian, will return to the UI campus to offer a balanced view of the powerful cultural phenomenon of video games in a public discussion called “Of Games and God: A Christian Exploration of Video Games.” The free event, part of the Geneva Lecture Series, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, in lecture room 2 of Van Allen Hall. There will be time for questions and comments after the presentation.

Schut, who attended Calvin College and then earned a Ph.D. in communication studies from Iowa in 2004, chairs the Department of Media and Communication at Trinity Western University in British Columbia, Canada. His widely noted book, Of Games and God, was published in 2013. During his UI visit, he will particularly address the hot-button issues of violence and addiction in relation to video games.

Founded in 1976, the Geneva Lecture Series aims to demonstrate the continuing relevance of the Judeo-Christian message to the life of the mind. To date, more than 70 nationally and internationally renowned speakers have been invited to speak on the UI campus.
