Offices and Awards

Faculty—

Linda McGuire, associate dean in the College of Law, was presented with the Fr. Robert Drinan Award for her work in fostering an ethic of pro bono service through personal service, program design, and management.

The award was presented by the Association of American Law Schools’ (AALS) Section on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities at the AALS annual conference in Washington, DC on Jan. 4.

Dr. R. William Field, professor in Occupational and Environmental Health, was selected as a provisional member of the National Academy of Science’s (NAS) nine-member committee tasked with planning the study of "Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations near Nuclear Facilities in the United States."

The NAS will perform the pilot study of cancer risks in populations near seven U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (U.S.NRC)-licensed nuclear facilities using two epidemiologic study designs including a records-linkage-based case-control study of cancers in children.

Field was also appointed chairman of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board’s Radiation Advisory Committee for a one-year term beginning Nov. 4.

Greg Carmichael has been appointed as chair of the Scientific Steering Committee for the Open Programme Area Group on Environmental Pollution and Atmospheric Chemistry. Carmichael is the Karl Kammermeyer Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, associate dean for graduate programs and research, co-director of the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, and director of the UI Informatics Initiative,

The appointment was made at the 16th meeting of the World Meteorological Organization's Commission on Atmospheric Sciences (CAS) held in Antalia, Turkey, in November. Member countries appointed him to the four-year renewable term that started Jan. 1.

CAS supports research in atmospheric sciences with the aim to prepare societies when natural disasters strike, to protect the environment, and to ensure that the responses to environmental change are well informed.

Ed Sander, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, has been named a "rising star" by the Biomedical Engineering Society Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering Conference. He will present his research "Multiscale Mechanical Interactions Guide Fibroblast-Mediated Remodeling in Fibrin Gels," at the Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering conference in San Diego, Calif. on Jan. 7-11.

Students—

Laura Gallo, a graduate student in the UI College of Education, received an honorable mention for the leadership essay she submitted on counseling advocacy at the Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) national level.

Gallo has also been selected as a CSI Leadership Fellow and will serve in that capacity during CSI Days at the American Counseling Association conference in Hawaii in March.

Janice Byrd, a graduate student in the UI College of Education, has also been selected as a CSI Leadership Fellow and will serve in that capacity during CSI Days at the American Counseling Association conference in Hawaii in March. She was also selected as one of two leadership interns.

Kira Pasquesi, a UI graduate student in the UI College of Education, has been selected by the American College Personnel Association College Student Educators International as an Emerging Professional Annuit Coeptis honoree.
