Faculty—

Janet Williams, professor in the College of Nursing, was has been selected as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious award recognizes a Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) member who has significantly advanced the profession of nursing either through an extensive program of research or creation of environments where research can flourish, and whose distinguished career yielded outstanding and noteworthy accomplishments. The award will be presented at the Midwest Nursing Research Society Annual Conference, March 27-30 in St. Louis, Mo.

Barbara Rakel, associate professor in the College of Nursing, has been selected as recipient of the Distinguished Researcher Award by the Pain and Symptom Management Research Section of MNRS. This award is given to a senior scientist who has made substantial contributions to the field. The award will be presented at the Midwest Nursing Research Society Annual Conference, March 27-30 in St. Louis, Mo.

Staff—

Barbara St. Marie, research fellow in the College of Nursing, has been selected as a recipient of the Junior Researcher Award by the Pain and Symptom Management Research Section of MNRS. This award is given to a junior faculty who has potential for significant contributions to the field. The award will be presented at the Midwest Nursing Research Society Annual Conference, March 27-30 in St. Louis, Mo.

Students—

Soley Thorsteinsdottir, a senior in civil engineering in the UI College of Engineering, has been named to the inaugural Theta Tau Educational Foundation All-Academic Team.

Thorsteinsdottir, along with 90 others from Theta Tau chapters throughout the United States, were selected based on high grade point average in the previous semester and active engagement in their chapters. The average GPA among all honorees was 3.6. One from each Theta Tau Region (for a total of 8) will be named Team Captain in the coming weeks and will receive a scholarship from the Educational Foundation.

Thorsteinsdottir serves as Engineering Student Council representative for Theta Tau at the UI.

Lisa Shah, a graduate student in the College of Nursing, was selected to receive the MNRS Dissertation Grant for her dissertation research on “Family Communication of Genetic Risk for Cardiac Disease.” The award will be presented at the Midwest Nursing Research Society Annual Conference, March 27-30 in St. Louis, Mo.

Pamela Ries, professor in the College of Education, presented "The Nonacademic Challenges of College Students with Behavioral, Emotional, and Cognitive Disabilities," at the 37th Annual Teacher Educator of Children with Behavioral Disorders Conference, Tempe, Ariz. on Oct. 25, 2013.

Ries also presented, "UI REACH - A Big Ten University Educational Career, and Living Experience," lecture at the EdEvents Iowa Transition Conference, EdEvents: Providing High Quality Educational Events in Coralville, Iowa on Oct. 10, 2013.

Renita R. Schmidt, associate professor in the College of Education, presented "Strong Girls Read Strong Books: The Transformative Power of an After School Book Club," symposium and "Methods and Materials Elementary Teachers Use for Reading and Language Arts Instruction," roundtable at the Literacy Research Association Annual Meeting, Literacy Research Association, Dallas, Texas on Dec. 6, 2013.

Schmidt also presented the following at the 102nd Annual Convention of the National Council of Teachers of English, National Council of Teachers of English, Boston, Mass. on Nov. 23, 2013:

  • "Yet another Wes Moore: An analysis of young adult and adult versions of Wes Moore's memoir," paper
  • "Claiming the Future of Literacy: De-Testing and De-Grading Our Classrooms," roundtable
  • "Kenneth Goodman - Educational Leader, Innovater, and Activist,"

Amanda H. Thein, associate professor in the College of Education, presented "Strong Girls Read Strong Books: The Transformative Power of an After School Book Club," symposium presented at the Literacy Research Association Annual Meeting, Literacy Research Association, in Dallas, Texas Dec. 6, 2013.
