The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free performance by the UI Symphony Orchestra with the combined School of Music choirs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.

The concert, conducted by Timothy Stalter, UI School of Music professor and director of choral activities, will feature the following selections:

  • Vesperae solennes de confessore, k.339 – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
  • Symphony of Psalms – Igor Stravinsky
  • Psalm 114, op.51, Da Israel aus Ägypten zog – Felix Mendelssohn

Stalter conducts the premier choral ensemble, Kantorei, and the University Choir; teaches graduate advanced conducting; and oversees the graduate program in choral conducting and pedagogy. He is particularly interested in researching issues relating to the teaching of conducting to undergraduate and graduate students, contemporary British choral music, and historical musical performance. He is a frequent guest clinician in the United States and is an active member with the American Choral Directors Association.

In addition to conducting and teaching choral music, Stalter is active as a tenor soloist in the United States and abroad, specializing in music of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods.

The UI Symphony Orchestra has been hailed as one of the finest university orchestras in the United States. In addition, this organization is one of the leaders in the premiering and promoting of new literature.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
