The University of Iowa will join over 100 countries worldwide to celebrate international education and exchange in observance of International Education Week 2013, a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education.

The public is invited to attend several lectures, workshops, information sessions, and other educational and social events Friday, Nov. 8 through Friday, Nov. 15 as part of this annual UI tradition.

The following activities are all free and open to the public:

• WorldCanvass: The Social Impact of Sustainability: Friday, Nov. 8, 5 p.m. Old Capitol Senate Chamber. Featuring the presentation of the International Impact Award with a reception to follow.
• Adopt-A-Language Fair “Coffee, Tea and World Languages:” Monday, Nov. 11, 3-6 p.m. 1117 UCC. Sample a variety of coffee, tea, and sweet treats from the four corners of the world.
• Auto-Documenting the Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda: The Testimonial Encounter within the Cinema of Me: Monday, Nov. 11, 6:30 p.m. 315 Phillips Hall.
• Guantanamo: The Struggle for Justice and Human Rights: Monday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m.in C20 Pomerantz Center. Featuring James Yee, former Army Captain and chaplain at Guantanamo Bay.
• 2nd Annual Global Health Symposium: Tuesday, Nov. 12, 5-8 p.m. College of Public Health Building. Students and faculty will showcase their work in global health.
• Stanley Application Basics Information Session: Tuesday, Nov. 12, 3:30-5:00 p.m. 1117 UCC. Strategies and timelines for submitting the Stanley Award will be discussed.
• The Dialogue film screening: Tuesday, Nov. 12, 4:30-6:30 p.m. 1505 Seamans Center. Four American and four Chinese students travel together through China in this documentary.
• Speakeasy for Stanley: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 7 p.m. The Sanctuary Pub, 405 S. Gilbert St. Iowa City. Past grantees of the Stanley Awards for International Research will read from their work.
• Educate for the Future: Teach in the Peace Corps!: Wednesday, Nov. 12, 7-8 p.m. 1117 UCC. Returned Peace Corps Volunteers will share their stories of teaching in developing countries.
• Pronunciation of Chinese Names and Greetings community workshop: Thursday, Nov. 14, 5:30-6:30 p.m. 2520D UCC. Learn the basics of the Chinese language and pronunciation system.
• Trivia Night: Thursday, Nov. 14, 6-9 p.m. Jones Commons, Lindquist Center Room N300. Test your knowledge of international trivia at this social mixer for all UI students.
• Chinese cook off: Friday, Nov. 15, 6-8 p.m. 1117 UCC. Student contestants will share their culinary expertise while audience members sample and vote for their favorite Chinese dishes.

Winners of the annual photo, video, and essay contest, held in conjunction with the UI’s International Education Week celebration, will be announced later this week.
