After a year of extremes for the Iowa River, it’s time to show a little love by cleaning up the debris and refuse left behind by surging floodwaters followed by devastating drought.

Several University of Iowa groups are working with the city of Iowa City to organize an Iowa River Cleanup project from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 12.

Volunteers, age 18 or over, are invited to help pick up trash along the banks of the Iowa River from Park Road to the Sturgis Ferry Boat Ramp. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot near the University Water Plant, 208 W. Burlington St. at 8:30 a.m. Parking is available in metered spots south of the Main Library or in Lot 11 by the hour.

Carol Sweeting, chair of the river cleanup committee, says the project is a great way for volunteers to demonstrate their commitment to a cleaner environment.

“Many of us walk along the Iowa River almost daily as we head to work or classes. Taking care of the river is especially important to us, and we think this is one way we can try to make things a little better right here at home,” Sweeting says.

Volunteer activities, in addition to gathering small debris, may include the removal of larger trash items from the banks and sandbars of the river (i.e., tires or building materials). Volunteers may also choose to sort and wash recyclable material from the collected debris. Please plan accordingly by wearing proper attire, such as sturdy closed-toe shoes, bug spray, and sunscreen. Bringing a pair of work gloves is recommended. Bags and some gloves will be provided.

Co-sponsors of the event include the city of Iowa City, the Engineering Staff Advisory Council (ESAC), UI Facilities Management, and the UI Office of Sustainability. For more information and to register, visit here.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI-sponsored events. Persons with disabilities who require an accommodation in order to participate in the cleanup should contact Jackie Stolze of IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering in advance at 319-335-6410.
