The University of Iowa String Quartet Residency Program—coordinated by violist Elizabeth Oakes, lecturer in the UI School of Music—will present a free public performance by the JACK Quartet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The concert, which will feature clarinetist Derek Bermel, is part of the JACK’s extended residency Oct. 6-13 at the UI School of Music. The residency will include master classes, public presentations on the entrepreneurial side of a chamber music career, and numerous opportunities for UI School of Music students to work one-on-one with these guest ensembles.

The Oct. 12 program will feature works by Rodericus, Wolfgang von Schweinitz, John Zorn, and Bermel.

  • JACK open rehearsal of works by University of Iowa composers, 7-10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, Riverside Recital Hall
  • "Under the Hood": The JACK Quartet, 12:30-1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, Room 180 Music West. Ever wondered how the JACK Quartet creates so many amazing and unusual sounds? Join the JACK in this informal setting as members take us behind the scenes to show us how they create their incredible palette. Works explored will be pulled from their October 12 concert.
  • Composer reading session, 2:30-5:30 p.m. UCC Recital Hall.
  • JACK open rehearsal of works by University of Iowa composers, 7-10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, Riverside Recital Hall.
  • Chamber Music Master Class with the JACK Quartet, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 180 Music West. Join the JACK Quartet as they share their expertise with UI School of Music chamber music groups.
  • Clarinet master class with Derek Bermel, 2:30-3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, Chamber Room 2, UCC.
  • Derek Bermel lecture, 3:30-5:50 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, Electronic Music Studios (221 Becker Communication Studies Building).
  • JACK Quartet concert of works by University of Iowa composers, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, Riverside Recital Hall. The JACK will perform work by Joshua Marquez, Justin Comer, Leonid Iogansen, Alexandros Spyrou, Nima Hamidi, Jason Palamara, and Brian Penkrot.

The recipient of New Music USA's 2013 Trailblazer Award, the JACK Quartet has performed to critical acclaim at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, and other world-renowned venues. The members of the quartet met while attending the Eastman School of Music and studied closely with the Arditti Quartet, Kronos Quartet, Muir String Quartet, and members of the Ensemble Intercontemporain.
