In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court began to address the scope and limits of the constitutional right to possess a firearm.
In a Lifelong Learning series event hosted by the UI Alumni Association, two University of Iowa professors will discuss how issues of gun control and mental health intertwine. “Second Amendment and Mental Health Issues Discussion” takes place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Cedar Rapids Public Library, 450 Fifth Ave. S.E. ( map). Although the event is free and open to the public, participants are asked to register by noon on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Lifelong Learning website.
Todd Pettys, associate dean for faculty in the College of Law and the H. Blair and Joan V. White Chair in Civil Litigation, will discuss what the court has told us thus far about the right to possess a firearm. He also will discuss lawmakers’ efforts to define the gun-possession rights of people with mental illness, as well as individuals considered potentially dangerous by law enforcement.
James Potash, professor and Paul W. Penningroth Chair of psychiatry in the Carver College of Medicine, will provide insights into the legal issues regarding care of the mentally ill in Iowa, highlighting the importance of providing proper psychiatric treatment to those in need.
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, contact Whit France-Kelly in advance at 319-335-3296.
