Communication scholar will give two public sessions on the UI campus

Distinguished international communication scholar Chin-Chuan Lee will give two public sessions on the University of Iowa campus.

Lee will give a lecture titled “Local Experiences, Global Theories: Cultural Relevance in International Communication Research” from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in W 254 of the UI Adler Journalism Building.

He will also give a lecture titled “Why are Chinese Media so Timid?” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in Room 302 Schaeffer Hall. Both talks are free and open to the public.

Lee received his doctorate from the University of Michigan, his Master of Arts from University of Hawaii, and his Bachelor of Arts from Chengchi National University. He is chair and professor of media and communication and director of the Center for Communication Research, City University of Hong Kong, and professor emeritus of journalism and mass communication at the University of Minnesota, where he also directed the China Times Center for Media and Social Studies.

A social scientist, humanist, and expert on mass communication in greater China, he also is a revered teacher and mentor. He was the founding president of the Chinese Communication Association. He has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited about 20 books as well as authored some 45 book chapters and scores of academic articles for both English and Chinese-language scholarly publications.

Lee’s visit to Iowa is sponsored by the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies and the Confucius Institute, both part of UI International Programs, and the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS).
