Police seek suspect in armed robbery of cab driver

Officials believe there's no further safety threat in area

Iowa City Police continue to follow leads in the reported armed robbery of a cab driver at 10:05 p.m. Sunday near Melrose Avenue and Samoa Drive but said Monday morning that they don't believe the situation presents any further safety threat for the area.

The victim was contacted by telephone and drove to Samoa Drive to pick up a passenger. While waiting the suspect approached the driver, displayed a handgun, and demanded money. The driver complied and the suspect fled on foot taking a quantity of cash.

The suspect is described as a skinny black male in his mid 20s and was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call the Iowa City Police Department at 319-356-5276.

Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of this suspect. Anyone with information about this crime is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 358-TIPS (8477). All call are held in strict confidence and anonymity is guaranteed. Individuals providing information do not have to reveal their identity to collect a reward.

Because the incident took place near the University of Iowa campus, UI Police issued a Hawk Alert notification to students, faculty and staff.
