Visitors coming from the east advised to use I-80 exit 246
Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Construction on Interstate 80 exit 244 to Dubuque Street will alter traffic bound for the University of Iowa campus over the next several weeks.

The westbound off-ramp from the interstate is closed. Visitors coming from the east should instead use exit 246 to Dodge Street.

The eastbound off-ramp and both on-ramps to I-80 remain open, but lanes are reduced on the eastbound off-ramp and on north Dubuque, creating possible delays.

The changes primarily affect traffic headed for the central UI campus, including the university’s residence halls. Traffic to UI hospital and athletic facilities should continue to use exit 242 to First Avenue in Coralville.

Students and families moving into the residence halls should note the detour and use exit 246 if arriving from the east. (See this map for routes to UI Housing facilities.)

Clinton Street one-way during peak move-in

Traffic from the intersection of Church and Dubuque streets to the intersection of Clinton and Bloomington will be reduced to southbound only on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 21-22, 7 a.m.-6 p.m.

Through traffic should keep left. No metered parking will be available.

From Dodge Street, traffic bound for east-campus housing facilities—Daum, Burge, Currier, Stanley, Mayflower, and Parklawn residence halls, and Clinton Street Area Apartments (Centerstone, Bloomington House, Dubuque House)—should turn right at Church Street. From Church:

  • Daum, Burge, Currier, and Stanley traffic should continue beyond Dubuque Street, where Church curves to the left and becomes Clinton Street. Residence halls are located on the right along Clinton.
  • Traffic to Clinton Street Area Apartments should follow Church to Clinton. Apartment residents check in at Daum residence hall.
  • Mayflower traffic should turn right at Dubuque and proceed down the hill, past Park Road, and to Mayflower on the right. Mayflower traffic should stay in the right lane to access the parking lot.
  • Parklawn traffic should turn right at Dubuque Street, then left at Park Road. Parklawn is located at the top of the hill on the left.

Traffic bound for west-campus facilities—Rienow, Slater, Hillcrest, and Quadrangle residence halls, and Hawks Ridge Apartments—should take Dodge Street to Burlington Street and turn right. From Burlington:

  • Traffic to Rienow, Slater, Hillcrest and Quadrangle should proceed across the Iowa River and Riverside Drive. The residence halls are located on the hill just west of Riverside.
  • Traffic to Hawks Ridge should cross the Iowa River, turn left on Riverside Drive, then turn right on Highway 1. The apartments are on the right side of the highway.

Lane closures on Dubuque may cause congestion around Mayflower—visitors should use caution. Although Dubuque Street on-ramps remain open, I-80-bound drivers leaving all residence halls are advised to use alternate routes to avoid delays.

Drivers can follow the inbound detours described above back east to Governor Street. Turn left on Governor, which connects to Dodge and returns to I-80 exist 246. (See this map for outbound routes.)

In addition, UI employees, students, and others are encouraged to use alternate routes and avoid north Dubuque Street, particularly during the residence-hall move-in period that begins Sunday, Aug. 18 and continues through the following weekend.
