Offices and Awards

Faculty—
Julie Holloway, head of the Department of Prosthodontics in the UI College of Dentistry, was elected president of the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics at the recent AAFP meeting Feb. 22-23 in Chicago. Holloway previously served as webmaster, vice president, and president-elect. She will serve a one-year term as president.

Lisa Hebl, adjunct faculty in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry in the UI College of Dentistry and clinical coordinator for Kirkwood Community College's (KCC) dental hygiene program, received the Distinguished Service Award from Kirkwood. Hebl has been an adjunct faculty at Kirkwood since 1999 and was honored for her demonstrated leadership in coordinating KCC's health study abroad program in Guatemala.

Gerald Denehy, professor in Operative Dentistry in the UI College of Dentistry, was given the Academy of Operative Dentistry Lifetime Achievement Award for his life-long contribution to operative dentistry and dental education.

The Institute of International Education selected Christopher Morphew, higher education professor and director of the College of Education’s Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, as one of 25 ambassadors of the PromoDoc initiative. The project will focus on promoting European opportunities for doctoral study, which are important, UI President Sally Mason says, “not only to our graduate students’ education, but also to increasing foreign educational exchange.”

Professor Dennis Maki, professor in the UI College of Education's Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Program, has been selected to receive this year's Distinguished Career in Rehabilitation Education Award from the National Council on Rehabilitation Education. This award is given to recognize a consistent and substantial record of excellence as a rehabilitation counselor educator. The award will be presented to Maki at the Awards Banquet of this year's annual conference in San Francisco on April 12.

Staff—
Joyce Hamilton , groundskeeper II, Landscape Services, was named lawn professional of the year by the Iowa Professional Lawn Care Association for 2012. Hamilton leads a six-person turf crew that is responsible for mowing, trimming, fertilizing, and aerating the campus turf on the UI Main Campus.

Students—
Brian Tu, a master’s student in the College of Education’s Higher Education and Student Affairs programs, was named to the Commission for Social Justice Educators Directorate Board for 2013.

University—
The Carver-Hawkeye Arena addition project won a Best Projects Sports/Entertainment Award of Merit from Engineering News-Record magazine. Projects were honored in categories ranging from civil, government buildings and urban development to multifamily residential, transportation and sports facilities.

The 131,000 square foot addition, located on the north side of the original Carver-Hawkeye Arena complex, includes practice gymnasiums and strength training for sports including basketball, volleyball and wrestling; locker rooms; administrative and coaches' offices; sports marketing; media area; equipment and training room; and other improvements. Construction began on the addition in October 2009 and was complete in September 2011.

Bill Field, professor of Occupational and Environmental Health in the College of Public Health, presented "Radon in Schools" to the National Council of State Legislators at the Midwest Environmental Health Summit, Jan. 24 at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines; "Radon: The leading Environmental Cause of Cancer Mortality in the U.S." to the Iowa Chapter ACOFP at the Midwinter Osteopathic Family Practice Conference Jan. 20 in Des Moines; "Radon: the Seventh Leading Cause of Cancer Mortality in the U.S." to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, Inc. at the Day at the Capital Feb. 26 in Des Moines.

Keith Mueller, professor of Health Management and Policy in the College of Public Health, presented “Transforming Health Care in Rural America: Turning Change into Improvement for Rural Residents” at the Rural Health Leadership Conference Feb. 12 in Phoenix, Ariz. and “ACOs and Much More: Health Reform Comes to Rural America” to the CAH Administrator meeting, Jan. 23-24 in Helena, Mont.

Clint MacKinney, clinical assistant professor of health management and policy in the College of Public Health, presented “Transferring Risk—the Road to Health Care Value” at the 26th Annual Rural Health Care Leadership Conference Feb. 10-13 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Jerald Schnoor, Allen S. Henry Chair in Engineering in the College of Engineering, will present three lectures in China May 13-23: "Water Sustainability in a Changing World," at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing; "Phytoremediation-Using Plants to Help Clean the Environment," at The University of Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Guangzhou; and "Intelligent Digital Networks for Sensing, Modeling, and Forecasting Water Quality and Quantity," at The University of Hong Kong.
