Top high school students to perform concert with UI ensemble Feb. 16

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free concert by the UI Symphony Band and the Iowa Honor Band at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.

The performance will feature conductor Richard Mark Heidel, director of bands in the School of Music; Maurita Murphy Mead, School of Music faculty member, on clarinet; and guest conductor Kevin Kastens, director of the Hawkeye Marching Band.

The program for the Symphony Band is as follows:

  • Danse Bacchanale from Samson and Dalilia by Camille Saint-Saens
  • Concertino by Francisco Mignone (transcribed by Kastens; Murphy Mead, soloist)
  • Gloriosa by Yasuhide Ito

The Iowa Honor Band features the state’s top high school musicians. The UI School of Music hosts the Iowa Honor Band Festival, which includes rehearsals, a director’s clinic, and master classes with UI faculty, culminating with the concert. The Iowa Honor Band program is as follows:

  • Dedicatory Overture by Clifton Williams
  • Sheltering Sky by John Mackey
  • Clarinet on the Town by Ralph Hermann (Murphy Mead, soloist)
  • Hosts of Freedom by Karl L. King (Kastens, guest conductor)
  • Arabesque by Samuel Hazo
