Maurita Murphy Mead, professor of clarinet in the University of Iowa School of Music, and graduate student Ze Emilio Gobbo will present the latest installment of the Distinguished Clarinet Lecture/Recital Series of Brazilian Music at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, in Old Capitol on the UI campus.

The event is free and the public is welcome.

The program will focus on Chiquinha Gonzaga, the first female composer of the choro. She suffered much discrimination in her quest as a composer and performer of the choro.

Mead is an active performer, receiving many invitations both nationally and internationally to perform Brazilian music. Her Brazilian concerts with Rafael Dos Santos include International Clarinet conferences and the National Clarinet Symposium of Brazil, as well as at many universities in the United States and abroad. It is her desire to promote and educate the public about Brazilian music and her passion for it.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For accommodations at the concert contact the School of Music at 319-335-1603. For a UI arts calendar and details about upcoming events visit the new Arts Iowa website.
