Trends in alcohol-related issues will top the agenda

Trends in alcohol-related issues will top the agenda for the bi-monthly meeting of the Partnership for Alcohol Safety Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Room 203 of the Johnson County Health and Human Services Building, 855 South Dubuque St., Iowa City.

The meeting is open to the public.

Sam Hargadine and Chuck Green, who head the Iowa City and University of Iowa police departments, respectively, will discuss officer observations and alcohol-related arrest data pertaining to downtown, neighborhoods, and football game days.

Stan Laverman, senior housing inspector for Iowa City, and Geoff Fruin, assistant to the city manager, will review the nuisance property ordinance and policies affecting downtown and neighborhoods.

Kelly Bender, UI campus-community harm reduction initiatives coordinator, and Steve Spenler, director of the Johnson County Ambulance Service, will review statistics on alcohol-related ambulance calls for the past year.

The Partnership for Alcohol Safety is a joint project of the UI and the City of Iowa City. Its mission is to identify and advocate for strategies that reduce high-risk drinking and promote a vibrant downtown.
