Pentacrest Museums Holiday Family Weekend is Dec. 7-9

Enjoy a weekend of family fun at the University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums!

On Friday, Dec. 7, Holiday Tubas will perform at 12:30 p.m. on the east steps of the Old Capitol Museum for the annual Tubas and Toys concert. Toys for Tots donations will be accepted, and cookies and cider will be provided.

From 6-9 p.m. on that same day, the UI Museum of Natural History will wrap up the fall season of Night at the Museum with “Dinosaur Dig.” Pre-registration for children in grades 1-5 is required with a fee of $25 per child, and the event is limited to 20 participants. On Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Old Capitol Museum will offer opportunities to learn about the Civil War through crafts, games, a gallery tour and scavenger hunts. Children will be able to make a Civil War-themed ornament to take home. Activities are free and aimed at families with young children.

On Sunday, Dec. 9, the feature film Little Women will be shown in Macbride Auditorium at 1:30 p.m. Meanwhile, scavenger hunts and gallery tours will continue at Old Capitol. Old Capitol’s weekend activities are presented by Museum Studies students in conjunction with the current exhibit, “Gone to See the Elephant: The Civil War through the Eyes of Iowa Soldiers.”

Finally, mark your calendars for Sunday, Dec. 30, when composer and Steinway artist Dan Knight will play a holiday concert welcoming Rose the Steinway Piano back to the Old Capitol Museum following her refurbishing in New York. The concert will begin at 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will follow the performance.

The UI Pentacrest Museums—Old Capitol Museum and the Museum of Natural History—will be closed Dec. 24-25. They will reopen with regular hours on Wednesday, Dec. 26. The museum galleries will be closed for annual maintenance Dec. 31 through Jan. 11, 2013.
