Julie Orringer and Ryan Harty, alumni of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, will present a free reading at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Glenn Schaeffer Library, adjacent to the Dey House.

Orringer is the author of the novel The Invisible Bridge and the short-story collection How to Breathe Underwater. Her stories have been published in the Yale Review, where they’ve twice been awarded the Editors’ Prize for best story of the year; the Paris Review, which awarded her the Discovery Prize in 1998; Ploughshares, which selected her work for the Cohen Award for Best Fiction; and the Washington Post Magazine.

Harty’s short-story collection, Bring Me Your Saddest Arizona, won the John Simmons Short Fiction Award. His stories have appeared in Tin House and the Missouri Review and have been anthologized in The 2003 Pushcart Prize and The Best American Short Stories 2003.
