Kantorei and the University Choir will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19, in the Second Floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus.

The Kantorei performance will be conducted by Timothy Stalter, associate professor in the UI School of Music and director of choral activities. The program consists of an eclectic mix spanning four centuries: Claudio Monteverdi’s Zefiro torna (from Sesto libro de madrigal, 1614) and Hor che’l ciel (from Ottavo libro di madrigal, 1638); two Rainer Maria Rilke songs, “Herbst” and “Lösch mir die Augen aus” by David Biedenbender; three nocturnes by Hildor Lundvik; and three spiritual arrangements by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw.

The University Choir, led by assistant conductor Mark Reagan, will perform Pelham Humfry’s “Lift Up Your Heads”; Johann Pachelbel’s Magnificat in D, PWC 246; two different settings of Psalm 109, one by Glaude Goudimel and one by Jan Pieterzon Sweelinck; “Calmes des Nuits” and “Le Fleurs et les Arbres” from Deux choeurs, Op. 68 by Camille Saint-Saëns; and four spirituals (“Elijah Rock,” “My Lord, What a Mornin’,” “Ride On, King Jesus,” and “Ezekiel Saw De Wheel”).

Kantorei is the premier choral ensemble of the University of Iowa, consisting of about 30 graduate students. Kantorei presents four to five concerts on campus each year, as well as a number of off-campus performances.

University Choir is a select, advanced choir of 50 to 60 singers, primarily undergraduate students. They present four to five concerts per year and combine to perform two major works with the University Symphony Orchestra.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For accommodations at the concert contact the School of Music at 319-335-1603. For a UI arts calendar and details about upcoming events visit the new Arts Iowa website.
