The University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios will present a free event at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in Room 101 of Becker Communication Studies Building.

The program will include:

  • “Emergences” by Hubert Howe, one of the first pioneers in computer music currently teaching at the Aaron Copland School of Music in Queens.
  • “Three Acousmatic Miniatures” by Daniel Weymouth who began his work at leading institutions in electronic music including Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique and Centre d'Etudes de Mathématique et Automatique Musicales in Paris.
  • Three works selected from the UI Electronic Music Studios call for scores: “Memoir of a Daydream” by University of Oklahoma student David Ikard; “There are Ghosts” by Brian Hernandez, who is studying at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University; and “Densité” by Benjamin O’Brien of University of Florida, who used SuperCollider and Paul Koonce’s PVC to produce his work.

The UI Electronic Music Studios were founded in 1963, when renowned physicist James Van Allen supervised a thesis project by James Cessna to build the world's first digital synthesizer. Van Allen persuaded the School of Music Composition Area to establish an electronic music studio. Lawrence Fritts, professor of composition in the UI School of Music, has served as director since 1994.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For accommodations at the concert contact the School of Music at 319-335-1603. For a UI arts calendar and details about upcoming events visit the new Arts Iowa website.
