University of Iowa School of Music faculty member Kristin Thelander will perform a free recital of music for horn by American composers at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in the Riverside Recital Hall. She'll perform with guest pianist Sue Haug and with the Bon Vivant Horn Quartet.

Thelander and Haug will open the program with the Halsey Stevens Sonata for Horn and Piano, composed in 1953. Following will be Calls for Two Horns by Verne Reynolds, performed by Thelander and Steve Schultz. The two hornists are placed in various locations on and off stage for an interesting effect of calls and responses. The first half of the program will conclude with "A Simple Song" from Leonard Bernstein's Mass from 1971.

The second half of the program will open with the Americana Variations by Douglas Hill, performed by the Bon Vivant Quartet. In addition to Thelander, the members of the Bon Vivant Quartet are Russ Lenth, Kelly Heidel, and Schultz.

The program will conclude with Thelander and Haug performing Margaret Brouwer's Sonata for Horn and Piano. It was commissioned in 1996 by a consortium of horn players led by Thelander, and recorded by Thelander and faculty colleague Rene Lecuona in 1999.

A UI alumna, Haug has been director of the School of Music at Penn State University since 2005.

The Bon Vivant Quartet has been active since 2010 in the Iowa City area. Lenth is a professor of statistics at the UI and is a member of the Southeast Iowa Symphony. Heidel performs with the La Crosse, Muscatine, and Ottumwa symphonies. Schultz, a UI alumnus, is a member of the Omaha Symphony.

Thelander has served as horn professor and director of the UI School of Music, and she is currently director of planning for the new music building.
