The University of Iowa's Energy Control Center has been selected to receive an APPA Effective & Innovative Practices Award for 2012, which includes $4,000 in cash. Additionally, the center will receive special recognition at APPA's annual conference in July and in Facilities Manager magazine.

Since April 2010, the Energy Control Center, part of UI Facilities Management, has revealed more than $500,000 a year in energy savings while enhancing customer communication and occupant comfort, making it a model for other institutions in the country.

APPA's Effective & Innovative Practices Award recognizes programs and processes that enhance service delivery, lower costs, increase productivity, improve customer service, generate revenue, or otherwise benefit the educational institution. This is the fourth Effective & Innovative Practices Award that Facilities Management has received, following one for its Biomass Fuel Project in 2005, its Route 66 Safety Program in 2007, and its Energy Hawks program in 2010.
