So what do you do here?
I direct the communication and marketing activities for the Office of Admissions.
What do you enjoy most about working in a higher education setting?
The energy, enthusiasm, and excitement that is buzzing on campus throughout the year. And I get to work with a lot of great people from all over campus.
Take us through your most memorable days at the university.
Helping fill sandbags before the flood hit campus in June 2008. It was incredible seeing hundreds working together like that, all wanting to help save or diminish the inevitable impact on the place they love.
The “Kickoff at Kinnick” at last year’s On Iowa! event for new first-year students. The start of a new tradition on campus. The fireworks in Kinnick were very cool.
What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken—and did it pay off?
Letting my daughter try rock climbing on the CRWC climbing wall at the age of 4. I knew she was in safe hands with the staff member who was belaying her, but that didn’t stop dad from freaking out a bit. She just got so tiny on that big wall the higher up she went! I started running up the stairs so I could get a closer look. It totally paid off. She loves it now; we usually go at least once a week.
If you could spend a day with anyone, from any era, who would it be and why?
My parents. They both passed away when I was 3.
If you could have a song written about you, who would perform it, and what would it be called?
Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, “Happy Go Lucky.”
If you could get rid of one invention in the world, what would you choose? Why?
Nuclear weapons. Anything that can do that much harm to that many people can’t be a good thing.
Name five of your favorite things.
- Biking (mountain and road) and hiking
- Oasis, “the” falafel joint
- Family movie nights in our basement (usually include pizza from The Wedge)
- Vacation in the mountains
- The book The Alchemist. And I just started reading the Harry Potter books with my son. Love it!
