Allan Gurganus

University of Iowa Writers' Workshop alumnus and former faculty member Allan Gurganus, best known for his bestselling novel Oldest Confederate War Widow Tells All, will present a free reading at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 15, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Dey House.

A Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, Gurganus is the author not only of Oldest Confederate Widow Tells All, winner of the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; but also White People, winner of a Los Angeles Times Book Prize; The Practical Heart, winner of a Lambda Award and the National Magazine Prize; and the novel Plays Well With Others.

Oldest Confederate Widow Tells All was adapted for Broadway, starring Ellen Burstyn, and was made into an Emmy-winning TV mini-series starring Donald Sutherland, Diane Lane, and Cicely Tyson.

Gurganus' short fiction and essays have been published in The New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic Monthly, and the Paris Review, and his fiction has been included in the O. Henry Prize Collection and the Norton Anthology of Short Fiction.
