The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine has received a seven-year, $28 million Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health. The grant is focused on extending the reach and benefit of clinical and translational research into communities across Iowa by fostering multidisciplinary collaboration across the university and the state.
Folland awarded NSF grant to study photonics in crystals

The National Science Foundation has awarded Assistant Professor Tom Folland a $604,691 grant for a project that will determine how certain classes of crystals can be used to control both direction, and orientation of light waves. A new study finds the original crust on Mars is more complex, and evolved, than previously thought. Researchers led by Valerie Payré determined the Martian crust has greater concentrations of the silicon, which may mean Mars’ original surface may have been similar to Earth’s first crust.
