This isn’t your kids’ VR headset. Researchers at the University of Iowa Operator Performance Laboratory are using augmented reality to assess how the proliferation of technology in the cockpit is affecting pilots’ concentration. They’re also using it to make difficult helicopter landings safer.

Three University of Iowa graduate students are partnering with eastern Iowa communities to identify brownfields, sites where redevelopment has been complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The students are compiling a database to help local leaders determine which properties to remediate.

Sean Forman started the site while earning his doctorate in mathematics
Baseball-Reference.com, the definitive online guide for baseball statistics, started out as a project that CEO Sean Forman worked on in his spare time while finishing his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Iowa. Tolerated by his non-baseball-fan advisor, the site is now Forman’s fulltime job.
